What Is Cord Blood and Cord Tissue Banking?

Cord blood and cord tissue banking is the process of collecting and preserving stem cells from a newborn's umbilical cord at the time of birth. These stem cells can only be collected once, in the moments right after delivery, and are stored for potential future medical use. The collection process takes place after the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut, and does not interfere with delivery or affect the health of the mother or baby.

Types of Newborn Stem Cells

Cord Blood (Hematopoietic Stem Cells)

The blood remaining in the umbilical cord after birth is rich in hematopoietic stem cells, the cell type used in treating a range of blood and immune system disorders.

Cord Tissue (Mesenchymal Stem Cells)

The umbilical cord tissue itself contains mesenchymal stem cells, which can develop into multiple cell types and are studied for use in regenerative medicine.

Family Use Considerations

Cord blood is a guaranteed match for the child it was collected from, and may also be a partial or full match for siblings, depending on inherited tissue type.

Collection Process

Registration

Parents register for the program ahead of the due date and receive a collection kit to bring to the hospital.

Collection at Birth

After the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, the attending clinician collects the remaining cord blood and tissue. This step does not affect delivery.

Transport & Storage

The collected sample is transported to the laboratory and cryogenically preserved for long-term storage.

Donor Eligibility

To ensure the highest standards of safety, donors are not eligible if they or their partner have been diagnosed with any of the following:

Thalassemia
HIV
Human T-lymphotropic Virus (HTLV)
Syphilis
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis C
